Louisiana Saltwater Series Sets Records at its First Tournament of 2012

A record number of anglers threw their hats into the ring at this weekend’s first installment of the Louisiana Saltwater Series in Empire, La. Fifty-nine teams turned out and tried to hook the big one, and six youths competed for prizes in their own division.
A whopping 158 redfish were tagged and released on Saturday, more than any past LASS tournament. The results of the tagging will aid conservation efforts for redfish in the future, helping to ensure healthy populations and a successful recreational fishing industry.
Brothers Gus and Gary Wilson of Gretna, La., took home the top prize, with a two fish total weight of 16.84 pounds, earning them $3,000. “We scouted Delacroix on Friday and found one pocket holding good fish,” said winner Gary Wilson. “Saturday morning we went straight to the pocket, and the fish hadn’t moved. We caught three fish out of the school and were done by 8:30 a.m.”

Each redfish tournament includes two-man teams with a $200 entry fee for each event. Up to two anglers under 16 are allowed to participate per team. The tournament is a 100 percent payout series.
Online registration is available at www.lasaltwaterseries.com. A $20 fee for all onsite tournament registrants will be incurred per team. Only cash and checks will be accepted for onsite registrants.
