Jogger Injured by Airborne Deer

While an increase in deer activity around this time of year may be a boon to hunters, the animals can present a hazard to motorists. Kystine Rivera, 27, was taken to a hospital last Thursday following a deer-related automobile accident in Loudoun, Virginia, but she was not behind the wheel. In fact, Rivera was not even in the car, instead jogging nearby when a buck struck the woman and knocked her unconscious.
According to WUSA9, a 71-year-old woman was driving a 2010 Toyota SUV when a deer stepped onto the road ahead of the car. The cervid was launched into the air following a collision with the vehicle. The animal landed squarely on Rivera, who was trotting past on the sidewalk.
“I was running, then I was on the ground and then was listening to the paramedic. I’m surprised I made it out alive,” Rivera told The Washington Post.
The sudden impact took the jogger entirely by surprise. Rivera says she only realized a buck hit her when paramedics told her they needed to remove her running shirt because it was soaked in deer blood. Both Rivera and the driver were taken to a nearby hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The deer perished at the scene.
