Vermont’s June Fishing Opportunities Abound

   06.08.11

WATERBURY, VT – Rapidly improving water conditions are setting the stage for excellent Vermont fishing opportunities in June, according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.

“Our Lake Champlain access areas are starting to become more usable as the lake level has dropped nearly a foot in the past six days, and it appears the seven-day forecast is favorable for further relief,” said Michael Wichrowski, the department’s lands and facilities coordinator. “This is great news for everyone living along the lake and coincides with this weekend’s Free Fishing Day and next weekend’s annual Lake Champlain International Father’s Day Fishing Derby.”

Saturday, June 11, is “Free Fishing Day,” a day when anyone, residents or nonresidents, may sample Vermont’s excellent fishing without purchasing a license. Saturday also is opening day of Vermont’s bass fishing season.

Here’s a look at special fishing events happening on Saturday, June 11:

Grand Isle Fishing Festival: Being held from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the Ed Weed Fish Culture Station in Grand Isle, it’s designed especially for youngsters and offers basic fishing instruction and the chance for kids to catch big trout in a pond next to the hatchery.

A “Let’s Go Fishing” clinic: 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. at Lake St. Catherine State Park in Poultney, the clinic is a great introduction to fishing. Gear and instruction will be supplied, free of charge. Contact Joel.Flewelling@state.vt.us for additional information.

The LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby is June 18-20. Go to the LCI website to learn more: http://www.mychamplain.net/
