“Big Bore, Big Payload” SIG SAUER P227 Highlights April Issue of GUNS Magazine
OutdoorHub 01.30.14
The April cover of GUNS Magazine features SIG SAUER’s latest evolution of the famed P220 series of .45’s, in the form of the P227 10+1 .45 ACP. Massad Ayoob investigates this new introduction from SIG, and he experienced a personal best while handling this precise semi-auto.
“SIGs have never been cheap. I’ll tell you right now, I think it’s worth it. I like the ergonomics, the reliability and the shootability,” explains Ayoob, achieving his best grouping ever. “The group formed a single, small, angled slash in the target: two very tight doubles connected by a single, smaller-looking .45 hole between them. The group measurement was a personal best in many decades of shooting SIG pistols: right at 0.70-inch for all five, measuring the bullet holes center-to-center.”
This issue also features John Taffin’s look at how Lipsey’s Rugers in .44 Special, .45 Colt and a .45 ACP Convertible classify as “perfect packin’ pistols.”
“Shooting the Bisley Model .44 Special can only be described as pure pleasure, as the grip frame really reduces felt recoil,” describes Taffin. “Both of these .45 Colt Flat-Top Blackhawks are very nicely finished and tightly fitted with no overlapping edges where grip frame meets the mainframe. Actions are relatively smooth and cylinders lock up tight for firing.”
Also featured in this issue of GUNS Magazine is John Barsness’s delve into chronographing factory ammo, Mark Hampton’s trophy-worthy H-S Model 2000P on an East African safari, Mike “Duke” Venturino’s bullet molding practices and Holt Boldinson’s look at the LeMat “Grape Shot Revolver.”
