This Week on AR-15 Podcast – Another Look at the 300 Blackout
OutdoorHub 03.13.14
Reed and Anthony are back this week to take second look at the 300 Blackout variant for the AR platform. The guys begin with the basics, beginning with the barrel change and the gas tube. Reed draws on his many years of experience to walk listeners through a step by step process to remove, install, and change the barrel for your new 300 Blackout build. Those watching the video broadcast get a look at Reed’s newly assembled build, complete with his Blackout barrel from Nemo Arms, purchased from Brownells.
Next comes the gas block. Reed provides good tips on size and adjustability for gas blocks with new builds. Anthony elaborates on the tools necessary to complete the upper receiver changeout successfully before switching gears.
So what is the 300 Blackout? Why does it exists. Reed and Anthony discuss some of the development history of the round, the problems associated with feeding a 7.62 through the AR platform, and the niche that the Blackout fits. Reed goes through some thought processes about .30 caliber rifles, and the pros and cons of having a dedicated .30 caliber in your AR toolbox.
Anthony relates some comparisons between standard 5.56 AR rounds vs the Blackout rounds with some ballistics testing videos. Is the Blackout worth the switch? What benefit is the Blackout? Is it worth switching over?
Finally, the pair discuss the ease of the switch. They cover what to buy, where to buy, what level of skill burgeoning gunsmiths need to get this done.
