Video: Fiery Dust Devil Occurs During Prescribed Burn

A dust devil, some tumbleweeds, and fire created a spectacular mix during a prescribed burn in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Area earlier this month. In a video from the burn posted to YouTube by Thomas Rogers, firefighters look on as the as the whirlwind sucked up flames and eventually spent itself. An additional acre of land was burned during the event.

Dust devils are prone to develop over barren terrain, desert, and during conditions with clear skies and little wind. Due to the small scale of these whirlwinds, dust devils are generally not considered dangerous. Because of the nature of the fire, though, firefighters gave the whirlwind a wide berth until it dissipated. No injuries were reported after the burn.
