Colorado’s Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area Spring Hike to Crater Lake Area
OutdoorHub 04.09.12
The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is holding its first hike of the spring on Saturday, April 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Join AHRA Naturalist Claire Davis and Volunteer Bob Hickey for a half-day hike to the Crater Lake/Cottonwood Gulch area north of Salida.
The trail is easy to moderate, although not suitable for children under 10. The total round-trip distance is six miles, with breaks, lunch and exploring along the way. The trail is pinon forested much of the way, with beautiful closed and open canyons. Bob Hickey will point out features of particular geological interest, and there are spectacular mountain views on the return hike. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing for the changing weather, bring along a sack lunch, plenty of water and sunblock. A hiking stick may be helpful for some.
The hike will start at the trailhead, which is located off County Road 175 and Railroad Street northeast of Salida. Specific directions can be obtained by calling the AHRA visitor center at (719) 539-7289. The hike is free of charge and space is limited, so call ahead to reserve a spot.
