FLW College Fishing Central Conference Headed to Carlyle Lake
OutdoorHub 04.16.14
FLW College Fishing is headed to Carlyle Lake April 26 for the second Central Conference tournament of the season. Up to 50 college teams will be competing for a top award of $2,000 and a berth in the 2014 Central Conference Invitational.
“The lake has really rebounded over the last five years,” said FLW Tour pro Travis Loyd. “It’s a great fishery with a very strong population of largemouth in it.
“Carlyle Lake is a unique lake,” continued the Illinois pro. “The north end is filled with stumps from prior standing timber. It’s a fairly shallow lake and the tournament will definitely be won in less than 6 feet of water.
“The fish will be shallow. If the water will stabilize and clear up a bit it could be won in the north end. The south end of the lake has a lot of great pockets in it and there’s a lot of rip rap and rocks. This time of year it’s notorious for a crankbait bite on the rocks.”
Loyd went on to say that he expected many of the fish to be spawning around the lake’s abundant shallow cover either in pockets in the south end of the lake or around the timber in the north end. He also cautioned the collegiate anglers to take care when navigating the north end due to the treacherous nature of the timber.
“I would think that some team will bring in over 20 pounds to win,” said Loyd. “A jig, a tube, and most definitely a spinnerbait and a ChatterBait will be good this time of year.”
Anglers will take off from Dam West located at 801 Lake Road in Carlyle at 6:30 a.m. Weigh-in will be held at the takeoff location starting at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Takeoff and weigh-in is free and open to the public.
