Water buffalo will charge a hunter in the blink of an eye, making the beasts one of the most difficult to hunt. But with spear in hand, Tim Wells, host of Relentless Pursuit, teams up with Brother Buck and Lynn Thompson to harvest a giant water buffalo in northern Australia. The men find themselves in range, but one misstep and the tables could turn on the hunters. Tune-in to the first of a four-part series of Relentless Pursuit’s Australian adventure, exclusively on Sportsman Channel, Friday April 25 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.
According to Wells, a broadside throw is the only realistic option when hunting water buffalo with a spear, so he must move in range to close the distance between a buffalo and himself. He successfully stalks his prey, but when the buffalo suddenly runs, it could be hours before another appears.
“Big buffalo are often alone which makes sneaking up on them easier than most,” said Wells. “Their lack of fear is characteristic of buffalo. Likewise, their willingness to charge is an element to keep in mind.”
Brother Buck and Thompson continue hunting for a water buffalo of their own. Buck knows they must be completely silent to close in on their target, but he quickly realizes success could be out of the question, as the buffalo has a different plan involving the hunters – to turn and charge them.
