Jazmin Almlie-Ryan qualified for her first World Cup Final today at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Cup USA in Fort Benning, Georgia. Although she finished in eighth place, she wasn’t too disappointed with her performance. Sure, there were a few stray shots in the middle of her string but there was one important accomplishment she made today – she earned a score that qualified her for the IPC Shooting World Championships.
Almlie-Ryan (Houston, Texas, pictured), along with three of her American teammates have earned Minimum Qualifying Scores (MQS) that have qualified them to compete in the World Championships in Suhl, Germany later in July.
Almlie-Ryan, Barbaro Ponce (Atlanta, Georgia) and Mariah Beckham (Daleville, Alabama) all earned their MQS today in R4 (Mixed 10m Air Rifle Standing SH2); one of two events contested today at the IPC World Cup. Almlie-Ryan was the highest finish today for the U.S. in eighth place. Ponce and Beckham, both making their World Cup debuts, each finished in 10th and 11th place respectively.
Jason Maroney of Australia set a World Record score in Qualification of 636.1 and went on to win gold in this event. Mike Larochelle of Canada won silver and Bradley Mark of Australia won the bronze.
Jay Rivera (Atlanta, Georgia), who made his World Cup debut yesterday in R1 (Men’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1), also earned an MQS with his eighth-place finish.
The other event contested today, R8 (Women’s 50m Rifle Three Positions SH1), once again saw Veronika Vadovicova of Slovakia winning her second gold medal of this World Cup. Lorraine Lambert of Great Britain won the silver and Karen Butler, also of Great Britain, won the bronze.
Perhaps the biggest event of this World Cup, R3 (Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone SH1), will be contested tomorrow, along with P5 (Mixed 10m Air Pistol Standard SH1). Reigning European champions Vadovicova and Great Britain’s Matt Skelhon have both claimed multiple World Cup podiums in 2014 and are among those to take the line. The U.S. will have John Joss III (Corsicana, Texas/U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit), who has had several top-ten finishes this year, along with U.S. teammates Nick Beach (Dresden, Ohio), Tammy Delano (Rome, New York) and Josh Budd (Fort Benning, Georgia/U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit).
Beach finished in fourth place in R1 earlier this week. The IPC World Cup will conclude on June 7.
