Crappie USA Releases 2014 Tournament Results for Patoka Lake

This past Saturday June 7th Crappie USA held a qualifying event on Indiana’s Patoka Lake where anglers from 8 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held October 16th-18th on Lake Cumberland at Somerset, Kentucky.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the team of Don Licht of Indianapolis, Indiana and Doug Sikora of Noblesville, Indiana with a total weight of 4.46 pounds and earning $1,000.00. Don and Doug were fishing the west Walls area in dirty water spider rigging jigs and shiners on hook fishing 5 to 11 feet to catch 45 to 50 fish during the day.

Second place went to the team of Michael Walters of West Milton, Ohio and Steve Ferguson of Puryear, Tennessee with 3.63 pounds and earning $600.00. Michael and Steve were fishing all over the lake in 8 to 14 feet of water slow vertical trolling Southern Pro jigs and live bait rigs on 14 foot B’n’M poles with Hummingbird 998 and Minn Kota trolling motor in a Ranger to catch 150 fish for the day. The team also won the Semi-Pro Ranger Cup Award receiving $250.00.

In third place was the team of Robert Raymer of Greenfield, Indiana and Kevin Wells of Camby, Indiana with 3.28 pounds and earning $400.00. Robert and Kevin were using Southern Pro jigs and B’n’M poles along with live bait rigs, spider rigging 8 to 10 feet of water catching their fish at 6 to 7 feet and caught 30 to 35 fish for the day.

Amateur Division Results

First place in the amateur division went to the lone angler, Steve Money of Fort Branch, Indiana weighing in 7.18 pounds and earning $700.00.  Steve fished west of Walls creek about a mile in standing timber using jigs and cork and minnow slow trolling to catch 35 fish for the day. Steve also captured big fish of the event with a 1.47 pound crappie which brought him an additional $269.50. To make his day even better he won the Ranger Cup award receiving an additional $250.00.

Second place went to David Bowser of Marion, Indiana and Mike Morrison of Muncie, Indiana with 3.65 pounds and earning $450.00. The team also captured 2nd biggest fish of the event with a 1.46 pound crappie and earning $115.50  David and Mike were fishing the Walls ramp area catching most of their fish on a lay down using cork and minnow in water 9 to 13 feet deep to catch 30 fish for the day.

Taking third place was the team of Jeff Yeakle of Jonesboro, Indiana and John Brumley of Marion, Indiana weighing in 3.2 pound and earning $300.00. Jeff and John,  the Grandfather/Grandson team fished up the Patoka river spider rigging in 10 feet of water with B’n’M poles with minnows.

Taking fourth place with 2.89 pounds was the French Lick, Indiana team of Scott Stemle and Darren Ragsdale earning $200.00. Scott and Darren were fishing Allen Creek area casting curly tail  Black/chartreuse jigs in 12 feet of water around standing timber  catching their suspended fish at 8 feet to catch 30 to 35 fish for the day.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.
