Mayan Wins Walmart Bass Fishing League Great Lakes Division Event on Wolf River Chain

Mike Mayan of Rosendale, Wis., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 7 ounces Saturday to win the second Walmart Bass Fishing League Great Lakes Division tournament of 2014 on the Wolf River Chain. For his victory, Mayan earned $4,584.

“It felt good, let me tell you,” said Mayan of his first BFL victory. “I have had top-five finishes there multiple times, so I was elated to get the win.

“I was out fishing with a friend the Tuesday before the tournament for three hours. I liked what I saw, so I decided to fish in the river,” said Mayan.

“I was throwing a minnow-colored Bass Assassin Split Tail Shad,” Mayan explained. “I was just targeting the rocks and the weed edges. The water came up a lot from the rain and I was fishing the inside edges in about 1 foot of water. You could see them when they came to get the bait.

“I caught largemouth and smallmouth and probably caught 20 keepers,” finished Mayan. “I didn’t think I would win. I was expecting 3rd or 4th place. Usually if people are catching them in Lake Winnebago they are a little bigger.”

Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and a Chevy Silverado, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 40 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and compete to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Rayovac FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
