This Week on AR-15 Podcast – Black Rifle Disease: How to Share with Your Buddies
OutdoorHub 07.16.14
The AR-15 Podcast is in a building lull for the rifle giveaway graciously sponsored by Brownells. Currently, the rifle is with a gunsmith who is working on the barrel. But visit the show notes or the Brownells website to get a better look at how the giveaway is coming along!
Today’s main topic is bringing your friends in the Black Rifle Family. How does you do that? What do you do and where do you start when introducing your friends to your AR world? The first thing is basic firearm safety. Obviously, if you’re going to bring your friends or family into the shooting sphere, they must learn to handle a weapon with care and safety.
The canons of firearm safety are of critical importance, and are the foundation of responsible firearm usage and ownership. Each organization has slight variants to each of the rules, but the core four remain the same: all guns are always loaded; do not point your weapon at things you don’t wish to kill or destroy; on target, on trigger–off target, off trigger; and know your target and its backstop.
If your friend’s first foray into the world of AR is the range, there are other things beyond the fundamentals of safety. Another important thing to review with him/her are the rules of the range. Each range is different; be sure that you are both aware of any special rules your range has. Keep your eye on the newcomer. Be the extra eyes to ensure safety and proficiency.
Once safety is covered, shooting tips are a good ice breaker. Demonstrate proper technique and posture. Show your friend the anatomy of the AR. What does each part do? How does it operate? If necessary, start with closer targets or perhaps larger ones.
