Crappie USA Tournament Results for the 2014 Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic – Teams Fish Deep for Winning Catch on Lake Cumberland

This past Friday and Saturday October 17th & 18th Crappie USA held the 2014 Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic on Lake Cumberland at Somerset, Kentucky where 250 of the top anglers in the nation competed for $107,000.00 in cash and prizes. This year’s Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic was sponsored by the Somerset-Pulaski County CVB. Lake Cumberland is well known for great deep water action and this event was proof that the big fish lay deep in Lake Cumberland. For more information on this areas phone: (800)-642-6287.
Semi-Pro Division Results
Taking first place was the team of David Jones of Knifley, Kentucky and Richard Williams of Paris, Tennessee with a 2-day total weight of 19.56 pounds. David and Richard also captured Big Fish of the event with a 2.41 pound crappie which they caught out of 40 fish the team caught in the 2-day event. David and Richard were fishing close to the dam on the main lake casting rocky bluffs, in 100 feet suspended on over hanging wood 40 feet deep. The team used baby bass colored southern pro jigs. The team had around 40 fish total for the weekend and was using the new Hi-Vis Yellow Gamma Line. David and Richard wish to thank God and all the sponsors on the tournament trail for making the whole event such a success. David and Richard earned a Ranger Z-118C boat with a 150hp Mercury Outboard, Minn Kota Terova Trolling Motor, a $1,032.00 Driftmaster Package, Humminbird 688C Fish Habitat Electronics and $900.00 for Big Fish of the Event. Bonuses: Minn Kota, Driftmaster and Southern Pro totaling: $1,100.00.
Second place went to the Hickory, North Carolina team of Randy Pope and Steven Deitz with a total weight of 19.5 pounds. Randy and Steven started casting points early moving to docks after three hours Each morning, used Yellow little fishy crème lure turning to pearl color later in day, fished in 7-25 feet of water landing 60 fish total had 2nd place big fish weighing 2.27 pound and earning $400.00. Randy and Steven earned: $5,000.00 plus a Minn Kota Charger.
In third place was the Gaylesville, Alabama team of Adam Mobbs and Carlton Teague weighing in 17.34 pounds. Adam and Carlton were fishing in Wolf Creek in weed cover from where lake was low in 18-40 feet of water, spider rigging stinger shad tipped with minnows landing 30 fish total. Team was a Grizzly Cooler owner team. The team earned $250.00 Talon bonus and $2,000.00
The Rome, Georgia team of John Hendrix and Kevin Randall took fourth place in the Semi-Pro Division weighing in 16.02 pounds. John and Kevin spider rigged the lower end of lake in 24-50 feet of water using Big Bite Baits in Blue/Chart color tipped with minnows, targeting lay downs and logs to catch 30-35 keeping fish. John and Kevin are proud to be on the Big Bite Pro Staff. The team earned: $1,000.00.
Fifth place was the 2014 National Points Champions Michael Walters of West Milton, Ohio and Steve Ferguson of Puryear, Tennessee weighing in 14.16 pounds of crappie. Michael and Steve were fishing wolf creek spider rigging using 3-18 foot B’n’M Poles in 25 feet of water with red/chart Southern Pro Lures in heavy cover landing 30 total fish. The team earned $900.00 along with $250.00 Ranger Cup Award.

Amateur Division Results
First place in the amateur division went to the team of Lynn Cochran and Nathan Cochran of Springfield, Kentucky with a weight of 16.81 pound. The Team fished the lower end of the lake towards ?the dam in 15-45 feet of water. The fish were holding tight on wood cover. The team was setting back and casting the bank on Friday with 2″ Southern Pro Glow tubes Saturday using minnows. Team caught around 15fish for Day 1 & 35 for Day 2. The team earned a Ranger RT 188-C with 90 hp Mercury Outboard, Minn Kota 80 pound trolling motor, $1,032.00 Driftmaster Package, Humminbird 570, Fish Habitat Electronics. Bonuses won: Minn Kota Charger, Driftmaster.
Second place went to the Grizzly Cooler Team of Glen Dalton and Robert Massey of Somerset, Kentucky with a weight of 16.43 pound. The team fished Burnside Island Area using one pole method in 10-20 feet of water using a Pearl colored baby shad jig. The team was a Minn Kota owner team and Driftmaster Team. Earning the team a Minn Kota Charger and $3,400.00.
Taking third place was the team of David Rogers and Jerry Rogers of Georgetown, Kentucky with a weight of 15.74 pounds . The team fished the lower end of lake in 12-24 feet of water, spider rigging over wood cover using minnows to land a total of 20 fish over the 2 days. The Pro Staff team using the Cumberland Crappie Double Seat Rig to Spider Rig earning the team $1,200.00.
Taking forth place with 14.72 pounds was the team of Ron Barker of Eubank, Kentucky and 7Donald Doby of Yazoo City, Mississippi . The team fished 3 creeks on the lower end of the lake, spider rigging as well in 20-40 feet of water, fishing wood cover using minnows to catch 40 fish total over 2 days. Earning the team $850.00.
In fifth place was the team of Kris Mann and Terry Mann of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky with a weight of 14.35 pound. The team vertical jigged in 45 feet of water on Friday and 20 feet on Saturday on the lower end of the lake using Pumpkin/Chart Crappie Magnet Jigs to land 24 fish total for both days. Earning the team $750.00.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships that was drawn at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.
Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.
Special Thanks to Somerset – Pulaski County CVB staff for a fantastic job assisting with the event. The City of Burnside for assistance in hosting the event, and all our national sponsors to took the time to attend and help with the event. Also a special thanks to Brushpile Fishing TV Show which filmed the event and to John Feltcher, Outdoor Writer that was on hand all weekend.
