LA Survivor of 40 ft. Glacier Fall Recounts Story on Outdoor Channel

Kansas City native Ted Porter, an accomplished mountaineer, recounts his icy cold glacial crevasse survival story on Outdoor Channel’s action-packed adventure TV series, “Fight to Survive,” which is hosted by professional rock climber and motivational force Craig DeMartino.

“Fight to Survive,” which premiered on October 4th as part of Outdoor Channel’s fall programming line-up, follows the true inspirational stories of those who have faced almost certain death and fought to stay alive. Each episode takes a survivor back to the flashpoint of their ordeal right into some of the most majestic and dangerous places in North America – and shows how they persevered to share their story with audiences.

In a very special episode, the series will share the harrowing tale of Ted Porter, who fell into a deep icy cold crevasse while descending into the isolated wilderness of Glacier National Park in Montana. After tumbling more than 40 feet and in excruciating pain, Porter recorded a video for his family to say goodbye. “You guys, if I don’t make it out, I love you,” he said. “I’m not kidding; this is no joke.”

Somehow, Porter powered through. Despite crushed vertebrae in his lower back and a host of other injuries, he was able to walk and crawl three-plus miles over rough terrain to find help. Now, more than one year later, Porter is making remarkable progress and is back in Los Angeles, where he resides. He’s even planning future hikes!

Through perseverance, resourcefulness and sheer force of will, “Fight to Survive” chronicles the tales of the struggle to overcome almost insurmountable odds. From the gripping action to the moving comebacks, Porter’s story, and the others recounted throughout the series, reminds audiences that faith, determination and human spirit can overcome when faced with the ultimate fight to survive.

Ted has chosen to portray himself in the dramatic re-enactment of his ordeal. Returning to the glacial crevasse was an important part of his personal recovery and will provide viewers with a startlingly realistic take – especially with the inclusion of Ted’s cell phone videos from the traumatic day woven into the episode.
