Video: Getting Shot “in the Name of Art”
OutdoorHub Reporters 05.26.15
A short documentary recently published by The New York Times takes a look at one of the most well-known pieces of performance art in recent memory: Chris Burden’s Shoot. In the performance, Burden’s friend, Bruce Dunlap, shot him in the arm at close range with a .22 rifle.
The brief video explores the thinking behind the piece and how it didn’t necessarily go as planned.
Many of Burden’s performances involved risking his life or bodily harm, though he switched to more benign pieces later in his career. He passed away at the age of 69 on May 10.
