Vince Vaughn Says Banning Guns is Like “Banning Forks to Stop Making People Fat”

Actor and screenwriter Vince Vaughn is well-known for his pro-gun stance, but the Wedding Crashers star surprised his fans when he compared a ban on guns to “banning forks in an attempt to stop making people fat” in a recent interview with British GQ.

“I support people having a gun in public full stop, not just in your home. We don’t have the right to bear arms because of burglars; we have the right to bear arms to resist the supreme power of a corrupt and abusive government,” Vaughn told the magazine. “It’s not about duck hunting; it’s about the ability of the individual. It’s the same reason we have freedom of speech. It’s well known that the greatest defense against an intruder is the sound of a gun hammer being pulled back.”

Vaughn went on to say that taking away guns will not lead to a decrease in crime or eliminate mass shootings in schools and other public places. Instead, he argued that gun-free zones are targets for spree shooters because they offer little resistance. Vaughn suggested that public schools be armed, just like many private schools across the country.

“These people are sick in the head and are going to kill innocent people,” Vaughn said regarding spree shooters. “They are looking to slaughter defenseless human beings. They do not want confrontation.”

In another interview earlier this year, Vaughn described himself as a libertarian and reiterated that he believed in the right to gun ownership and self-defense. Despite his real-life support for the Second Amendment, Vaughn is not often portrayed onscreen with guns. That may change, however, as Vaughn plays criminal entrepreneur Frank Semyon in the highly anticipated second season of HBO’s True Detective. Vaughn is also slated to appear in the mob film Term Life, which is set to be released later this year.
