“What is that? Should I touch it?”
If you’ve ever harvested a deer and asked yourself those questions, it is likely you have stumbled across a sick animal. Although these diseases are not transmissible to humans and generally do not spoil the meat, it is important to recognize sick deer when you find them. At the very least, your local wildlife officials would be interested to know where the deer was taken and in some cases, they can prevent the disease from spreading to other deer. So how’s your knowledge of deer diseases stack up?
As always, using rubber gloves when field-dressing a deer and cooking the meat thoroughly will help lower the risk of any contamination.
