The 5.45x39mm was designed by a group of Soviet engineers to replace the venerable—and still highly popular—7.63x39mm cartridge. To that end, its purpose was to serve as a light-weight, high-velocity round that allowed soldiers to carry more ammunition. It was hardly made to kill shiny white smartphones.
