Hill & Mac Gunworks, a firearms and shooting target manufacturer based in Georgia, recently teased the development of a modernized Sturmgewehr 44 (StG 44) on its website. Along with a host of computer-generated images of what the final product will look like, the company stated that the new rifle will be US made, chambered in modern rifle rounds (5.56, 7.63x39mm, .300 BLK, and 7.92x33mm), accept standard AR-15 magazines, and is compatible with HK-style trigger packs. Pictures of the rifle also show a rail system for additional sights.
“The HMG Sturmgewehr is a modern interpretation of the classic StG 44 bringing together the classic function and form of the original, while also making the firearm accessible and shoot-able…in a rifle caliber!” stated the product description.
To fans of historical weapons and World War II firearms in particular, this is a dream come true. First introduced in 1943 and pressed into service by the German army, the StG 44 is considered to be the first modern assault rifle. Although it entered the war too late to have a significant effect on the conflict’s outcome, the rifle influenced the design of firearms for decades to come. Finding one of these guns however, can be quite difficult. Despite being mass produced towards the end of WWII, the StG 44 is now relatively rare and can be quite expensive. The production of a modernized StG 44 in rifle calibers such as 5.56 and 7.63x39mm is something that enthusiasts have desired for a very long time.
According to Hill & Mac Gunworks, that wait may be over later this year. The HMG Sturmgewehr is slated to be released in fall or winter 2015. OutdoorHub contacted Hill & Mac Gunworks and was told that more information will be available at a later date. The company has not yet announced a retail price for the gun, or how many will be produced.
