Video: Australian Woman Discovers Huge Python under Car Hood

Could you imagine bringing your car to the mechanic and telling them you have a snake problem? In North America, they’d either laugh you out of the shop or run away as fast as their legs could take them. In Australia, however, snakes under the hood aren’t as uncommon as you would think. In the video below, professional snake catcher Richie Gilbert was called to the residence of a Queensland woman after she found what appears to be a seven-foot carpet python underneath her hood.

“Yeah that would give you a fright wouldn’t it?” Gilbert remarked after popping the hood open.

Sure enough the python was coiled up and warming itself atop the engine. If it was any other snake, removing it would have been quite a feat. However, carpet pythons are known for being relatively docile, which makes them popular among pet owners.

Gilbert hardly hesitated before yanking the snake out of the car and playing with it like a scary, scaly scarf.

“This is actually a rather common occurrence and we only get called for the ones that are seen when someone has had a reason to lift the bonnet,” Gilbert wrote on Facebook. “Imagine how many car owners head off to work in the morning with a sneaky snake under the hood and don’t even realise. Maybe we should make it mandatory to check under the hood before we drive our cars here in [Queensland]?”
