This infographic from Cannon Security Products showcases the developments that led up to our modern rifles going all the way back the 1600s.
Modern rifles have come a long way over the past several centuries. In fact, while early muskets might vaguely resemble the long guns of today, they were not actually “rifles” proper.
This is because muskets lacked grooves, or rifling, in their barrels. This infographic does a great job of illustrating the progress in small arms design. There are a few minor omissions, errors, and oddities, but it still does a good job of presenting the major changes and developments in rifle design throughout the years.
