The number one rule of being in the great outdoors is to always be aware of your surroundings. Knowing what kind of dangerous animals live in your neck of the woods could save you a lot of trouble down the road. For this angler in Thailand, what started out as pretty standard fish release ended badly when a large watersnake decided to chomp down on his hand.
It looks like it got him pretty good. On the bright side, few watersnakes in Thailand are actually venomous. The ones you have to look out for—the cobras and pit vipers—tend to stick to dry land.
Anglers in the Southeastern United States, on the other hand, should always be wary of the water-going cottonmouth, which can be aggressive and very venomous. The snake rarely attacks humans and will usually give plenty of warning before doing so, but anglers are still advised to be careful when releasing fish back into the water. The cottonmouth is the world’s only semi-aquatic pit viper.
