Video: Angler Impaled by Dead 500-pound Marlin

An angler in Honolulu, Hawaii was injured recently when a 500-pound marlin’s bill skewered his leg and pinned him on one side of the boat, even though it was already dead. According to KHON2, Russell Ching was fishing with friends off Kaneohe and landed a nice-sized marlin after an hour-and-half fight. The real battle, however, didn’t start until after it was being dragged on board. Ching said that the fish had died during the fight, but while they were pulling it onto the boat, the marlin slid headfirst into the angler’s leg.

“When it first went in, I couldn’t believe how easy it went into my leg. I mean, it was like a hot knife through butter,” Ching said.

Luckily for him, the bill plugged the wound and stopped most of the bleeding. It was a long two-hour drive back to shore, but since the marlin had missed all of the major arteries, Ching was able to make it to a hospital without any complications.

He said he plans on mounting the tip for good luck.

You can see an interview with Ching and video from the accident below.
