Clinton Aide: Of Course She Doesn’t Want to Abolish the Second Amendment

A campaign spokesperson for Hillary Clinton is clarifying the presidential hopeful’s stance on gun control, especially after remarks made by Donald Trump earlier in the month. While at a rally in Washington, Trump told a crowd of his supporters that Hillary is not only dedicated to additional gun control measures, she wanted to abolish the Second Amendment altogether.

“Hillary Clinton wants to abolish the Second Amendment,” Trump said at a rally. “Hillary Clinton wants to take your guns away and she wants to abolish the Second Amendment.”

Clinton would be the first to tout her gun control credentials, but to do away with a constitutional right? Clinton has talked about increasing gun control measures at several points in her current presidential campaign, and while she never said outright that she was moving to abolish the Second Amendment, her critics say that Clinton has consistently strived to undermine it. According to the NRA, Clinton even spoke publically about considering a national gun confiscation effort similar to Australia’s after the 1996 Port Arthur shooting.

“I think it would be worth considering doing it on the national level, if that could be arranged,” Clinton said at a townhall meeting last October.

Clinton also reportedly said that the Supreme Court was “wrong on the Second Amendment,” and that she was going to advocate for that case.

According to Chris Cox, executive director of The National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action, Clinton is wrong on all fronts.

“A majority of Americans support this freedom, and the Supreme Court was absolutely right to hold that the Second Amendment guarantees the fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms,” he said last year. “Hillary Clinton’s extreme views are completely out of touch with the American people.”

Those comments, coupled with Trump’s recent criticism, seems to have put Clinton on the spot. A Clinton campaign spokesman, Josh Schwerin, recently clarified to the media that Clinton absolutely did not support eliminating the right to bear arms.

“Of course Hillary Clinton does not want to repeal the Second Amendment. Donald Trump is simply peddling falsehoods and conspiracy theories in an attempt to divide the American people and win votes,” Schwerin told the Huffington Post.

The Trump campaign did not respond to this statement, but judging from Trump’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, distrust for Clinton still remains high for his supporters
