Video: Giant Nerf Gun for Adults

In the 1950s and ’60s, cap pistols, then later toy guns that fired small rubber erasers or plastic-coated soybeans, kept young boys entertained for hours. When mothers finally took notice, safer toys, like the Nerf Gun with its soft-foam projectiles sporting suction-cup tips, started showing up on store shelves. A little wimpy, maybe, but kids were happy because they could theoretically extend their activities to indoor spaces without getting into trouble.

Now comes Mark Rober, NASA engineer and self-proclaimed “science nerd,” with his behemoth—and fully-operational—Nerf Gun. More artillery than gun, the oversize launcher uses compressed air at 80 psi to fire projectiles made of pool noodles and toilet plungers at 40 mph.

To his credit, Rober, who was part of the team that put the Curiosity rover on the surface of Mars, built the giant Nerf Gun to be highly accurate as well—proving it in this video by shooting in-flight targets out of the air.

One word: Awesome!
