First Black Bear Seen in Kentucky in Almost a Century

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest recently discovered they have a new resident in their woods. A Kentucky black bear made its presence known on a couple of trail cameras that had been set up in Bernheim Forest.
Photos of the black bear were discovered on a trail camera in two different locations during the past 2 months in Bernheim Forest, near Louisville, Kentucky.
This comes as quite a surprise because black bear populations in this part of the country had been significantly reduced due to habitat loss. In fact, historical accounts indicated bears were essentially eliminated in early 1900s.
Because the bear has apparently decided to stick around, Bernheim is asking for help in naming their new family member. You can visit their website and vote between three different names: Bernie, Ranger or Wilson.
