Two Teenagers Arrested for Shooting Sandhill Crane

Two teenagers in northern Oakland County, Michigan, were arrested for shooting a sandhill crane.
Deputies contacted the men, an 18-year-old from Oxford Township and a 19-year-old from Lapeer County, after responding to a complaint from a neighbor, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The two men were believed to be illegally baiting waterfowl, including the protected crane, and exceeding the bag limit for ducks in a day – they were found with 18 ducks, which is over the legal limit of six in Michigan. The two men received five hunting violations from a Michigan DNR officer. They were also issued misdemeanor violations from the Oakland County Sheriffs Department for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to the news release.
Sandhill cranes are those tall, prehistoric looking birds, with long legs and long necks with red featherless foreheads. They are often heard making a very loud squawking noise. It is illegal to hunt them in Michigan, however, it is permitted in some states and Canadian provinces.
