The Internet is Stumped; How Did This Patagonian Cavy Wind Up in Belmont, Maine?

Okay fellow outdoor enthusiasts, someone took a photo of an animal that’s a little out of place, and we’re trying to get to the bottom of it.
A photo surfaced online showing what appears to be a Patagonian Cavy crossing a road in Belmont, Maine.
These little critters (which are actually considered large rodents) are commonly found in South America. They live in open and semi-open habitats in Argentina, and obviously given their name, Patagonia.
So the burning question remains: How the heck did it wind up on the East Coast of the United States?
