Flint Fivecoait of Corbin, Ky., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds, 11 ounces Saturday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Mountain Division event on Laurel Lake. For his victory, Fivecoait earned $3,671.
“I very much have a love/-hate relationship with this lake,” said Fivecoait. “Most of the time I hate it, but after Saturday, not as much. I hadn’t won a tournament in seven years and after awhile you really start to doubt yourself. This one was a lot of fun, though, and I’m happy to get the win. It was raining hard in the morning – we had almost an entire hour of straight downpour. You couldn’t even feel a lure. The rain finally started to taper off around 8:45 a.m., and the bite finally turned on for me.
“I was fishing a steep bank off of a cove near the Spruce Creek area,” Fivecoait continued. “I was fishing in about 6 to 8 feet of water and all of my fish came on a NetBait HBT Shaky Head rigged with a watermelon-colored Zoom Trick Worm. I caught around 12 fish on the day. I really would like to thank my co-angler Lucas Devere as well. He is a top-notch fisherman and it was nice to get on the lake with such a knowledgeable angler.”

The next BFL Mountain Division tournament is scheduled for June 2 on the Barren River in Scottsville, Ky. After the fifth Mountain Division tournament is complete, the top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Oct. 11-13 Regional Championship on Kerr Lake in Henderson, N.C. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and a Chevy Silverado, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 40 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and compete to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. The 2012 BFL All-American is being held May 17 – 19 on the Potomac River in National Harbor, Md. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
