Brownells 6th Annual Gunsmith Career Fair A Success for Attendees & Exhibitors

Nearly 200 students and more than 50 exhibitors turned out for Brownells 6th Annual Gunsmith Career Fair held in Des Moines, IA, on March 27-28, 2012.
Students had the rare opportunity to meet with representatives of top companies including Brownells, Sinclair International, Hornady, Barrett, Taurus, and many more. Companies with job openings accepted applications, and many conducted on-the-spot interviews.
“I’ve applied with Nu-Line, Hornady, Satern, and Scheels,” said gunsmithing student Molly Kail. “I think Nu-Line is very interested.”
A total of 77 students received sponsor-funded scholarships to assist with educational expenses, and more than 100 prizes were raffled off. It wasn’t just students, however, who benefited from the career fair, so too did many of the exhibitors.
“We’ve met a couple of good prospects with the CNC [machine] knowledge that we need,” said Peter Noreen, with The Gun Room Co. LLC. “This is the first time we’ve been here. Brownells is to be commended for putting this on.” Randall Power, with Grand Masters LLC and Jake Gray of STI International echoed Noreen’s sentiments.
John Krieger, President of Krieger Barrels, delivered the keynote address at Friday evening’s banquet. Students also attended 10 individual seminars presented by top industry professionals including Ron Power, Sharon Dressel, Glenn Fewless, and Tom Shay, ranging from proper stock layout to building a successful business plan.
“My grandpa started as a gunsmith and came to realize how vital gunsmithing and the maintenance of firearms is to an enduring Second Amendment and the lifestyle of freedom enjoyed by Americans today,” said Pete Brownell, President/CEO of Brownells. “The career fair is another way Brownells can help to strengthen the firearms industry and those who earn a living in it.
