Striking Photo of Lake Michigan Lightning Bolt Goes Viral

A crew mate aboard a Great Lakes freighter captured a spectacular photo of the Lake Michigan lightning bolt that’s being shared on Facebook,

According to the Detroit Free Press, Jack Brandenburg was the brave photographer who snapped the picture in the wee hours of Tuesday morning while aboard the Mesabi Miner.

Folks have been astonished by the photo, but are even more surprised to find out Brandenburg used his cell phone to capture the hair-raising image.

The photo was posted to Facebook by the Interlake Steamship Company, who uses the Great Lakes to deliver bulk raw materials for the power generation, steel-making and construction industries.

“The weather wasn’t quite as dramatic as it looks in the picture though it was raining and lightning,” Chrissy Kadleck, who manages social media and public relations for the Ohio-based Interlake Steamship Company, told the Free Press.
