Video: State of Emergency Declared After Mass Polar Bear Invasion Raids Russian Town

A small town in Russia declared a state of emergency over the weekend after a mass polar bear invasion left residents afraid to leave their homes.

Polar bears are massive in size, and notorious for their aggressive behavior. Adult male polar bears can weigh between 772–1,543 pounds and stand nearly 10-feet-tall! The only other bear that comes close to measuring up is the Kodiak bear.

This problem began back in December, when 52 bears started regularly visiting the archipelago’s main settlement, Belushya Guba.

According to Daily Mail, dozens of ‘aggressive’ polar bears have entered homes and public businesses around the remote Novaya Zemlya archipelago, where roughly 3,000 residents have been warned of a “mass invasion.”

“There are constantly 6 to 10 bears inside the settlement,” said the deputy head of the local administration, Aleksandr Minayev. “People are afraid to go outside and daily life is in turmoil,” he continued.

It’s gotten to the point where parents have become worried about letting children go to school.. And you thought the polar vortex was brutal..

Despite the terrifying circumstances, requests from locals to allow the shooting of some bears was reportedly met with a stern refusal from wildlife officials. Instead, a team of “specialists” has been deployed to the region to offer locals alternative measures of keeping the bears at bay.
