Massachusetts Bar Donates Rare Blue Lobster to St. Louis Aquarium in Honor of Stanley Cup Champs

A restaurant owner in Massachusetts must have thought somebody was messing with him after he saw what turned up in one of his seafood shipments recently.

Among the many lobsters ordered by Arnold’s Lobster and Clam Bar in Eastham, Massachusetts was an unexpected pop of color – and it couldn’t have shown up at a more opportune time..

In case you aren’t aware, the St. Louis Blues defeated the Boston Bruins to win the 2018-19 Stanley Cup Championship. So, folks around town have likely been feeling quite blue themselves lately.

“I said, ‘I think we have something special here.’ I couldn’t believe the color,” owner Nathan Nickerson III stated. “Everyone was circling around it, just wondering, ‘How did this happen?'”

Well, we’ve actually discussed this strange phenomenon in a previous OutdoorHub article, and you can check that out right here.

As for this particular crustacean, Nickerson says he plans to hold onto it for about another week or so, but then wants to donate it to an aquarium so it can “stay alive and stay safe.”

You probably wouldn’t have guessed which aquarium he wants to donate the little guy to, though.

“I’d like to give the blue lobster to the St. Louis aquarium (opening later this year) out of respect to the St. Louis Blues, who won the championship, to show that Bruins fans have class,” Nickerson said.

And to that, we say well done, sir!

Lobsters are normally a reddish brown or greenish brown to help them stay hidden on the sea floor, something this bright blue lobster would clearly struggle with in the wild. The probability of a lobster having this rare blue coloring is widely touted as being about 1 out of every 2 million lobsters, the University of Maine’s Lobster Institute claims.
