Another wild encounter that appears to be straight out of the Planet Earth documentary series was captured in somebody’s backyard, this time in Los Gatos, California.
The dramatic scene took place in the backyard of Santa Clara County resident Monica Hylbert’s home on Friday morning. As ABC News reports, the sounds of “growling and yipping” coming from the foothills of her neighborhood alerted Hylbert shortly after 7 a.m.
“I was pretty calm about it, I didn’t feel threatened. I was just intrigued by what was happening. It’s obvious the coyotes were trying to protect something,” Hylbert said.
Watch it all go down in the video below:
Unfortunately, we don’t get to see how this intense standoff ended, because Hylbert cut the video short just as the large cat was preparing to pounce.
“As soon as it started to pounce, that’s when I panicked and shut the door. Ended up shaking for about 5 to 10 minutes,” she recalled.
The critters eventually went their separate ways after squashing whatever beef they had with each other, but the lion apparently stuck around for a while.
The next morning, Hylbert’s security camera had caught images of possibly the exact same mountain lion returning to the scene..
While mountain lion sightings remain rare, it seems California residents keep seeing more and more of them every day. The sightings aren’t always as dramatic as Hylbert’s, but anytime you’re dealing with a large predatory cat, things can get pretty tense in a hurry!
