Michigan Natural Resources Commission to Meet May 17 in Onaway

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting Thursday, May 17, at the Walter and May Reuther UAW Family Education Center, 2000 Maxon Road, in Onaway, Michigan. All meetings will be held in the Upper Lodge Conference Center, except for a special event — scheduled at roughly 11:30 a.m. — to view Black River sturgeon and tour the fish hatchery on the Upper Black River on Twin School Road.
The day will start at 9:30 a.m. with a meeting of the Marketing and Outreach Advisory Committee (formerly the Technology, Information, Marketing and Education Committee). The committee will provide an overview of its new focus and structure, give an update on the DNR’s Marketing & Outreach Division’s progress (including the department’s growing partnership with the Pure Michigan campaign), and discuss the Youth Advisory Council.
Following the Black River hatchery tour, the Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries will convene at 2 p.m. to discuss trout, salmon, whitefish and lake herring regulations, deer hunting regulations, and cormorant-management efforts. DNR Wildlife Division Chief Russ Mason and Acting Fisheries Chief Jim Dexter will also provide updates.
At 3 p.m., the Committee of the Whole will hear a report from DNR Director Rodney Stokes.
At 4 p.m., the NRC will present a Partners in Conservation Award to Mary Ann VanLoekeren.
Immediately following the Partners in Conservation Award presentation, retired high school teacher and veteran taxidermist Doug Seibert of Gladwin will present the DNR with a replica of the 21-inch, state-record yellow perch.

The regular NRC meeting will begin immediately following public appearances. Items eligible for action by Director Stokes include a land use order to regulate use of the Stuart Frankel Trust Purchase/Wraco Lodge Lake in Roscommon County, as well as several land transactions.
