Night Of The Thermal Hunt: Part 1
Ben Ryder 09.29.20
As an adult, you really have to find a good reason to be out after dark trekking around the woods at all hours of the night. Whether you have kids or not, if you are in your 30’s or older, the chances that you get tired when the clock strikes 9:00 PM are pretty high. The grind of work and daily life can really get you in to a groove that makes you think you need to stay home when the sun goes down. The reality is, it doesn’t have to be that way. There is an incredibly fun way to break up the monotony and get yourself off the couch and into the woods; night hunting!
When I first begin down this path, heading out into the woods in the pitch black brought back many feelings from my childhood. I was never afraid of the dark as a kid and I’m not today, but let’s be honest even if I were I probably wouldn’t admit it. With night hunting, it’s not a fear of the dark that gets you, it’s more so the fact that you are intentionally calling in predators and you have limited use of your eye sight. The feeling of not knowing what could be lurking behind you is what makes hunting at night so unique and so much fun.
Over the past few years, predator hunting has taken center stage in my life and it has become a great way to spend time outdoors during the off season, especially in the summer. One of the best aspects of hunting at night is that you get to use some pretty cool gear, including thermals and night vision. In this series, we are going to decode the mystery surrounding hunting at night and get you ready for your first thermal hunt!
