Cross Country Cow Elk Road Trip with the Maven RS.3- Part 3
Andy Husek 12.31.20
In just a few short days, I will be loading up the car and heading west for my late season cow elk hunt. In a year with so many downs, I am ready to escape and pursue elk in an effort to fill my freezer with the best organic meat you can find in the world! On hunts like this, I don’t take any chances – I only use the most premium equipment in the field. I mentioned in Part 1 and Part 2 of this series that I will be using the Maven RS.3 5-30x50mm First Focal Plane as my optic on this hunt. While it’s certainly not my first scope, nor is it my cheapest, it ranks right up there with my higher-end glass and has given me stellar results thus far.
To start, the Maven RS.3 is a 5-30X scope with a large 50MM objective. This gives you the ability to gather tons of light in early morning and late evening situations. Also, those magnification capabilities allow for you to take in-close shots at the 5X power, but also reach out at longer range at 30X. Just for fun when truing my rifle, I shot out to 1000 yards and was blown away by the crystal-clear picture – even at that distance! Once I started calling wind correctly I could not only hear the steel ringing, but I could very clearly see the impact on the plates without any distortion.
As you would expect with a high-end scope of this nature, it comes with an adjustable parallax knob and exposed windage and elevation turrets for dialing distance and wind. The elevation turret features a lockable zero-stop so you can quickly and easily dial back to your zero without even thinking about it.
Moving into some of the technical pieces and internal components; the Maven RS.3 is a First Focal Plane scope. With three different reticle options, you can choose between two different MOA reticles and one MIL reticle.
SHR-W (MOA)
MOA-2 (MOA)
SHR-MIL (MIL)

As if all of that wasn’t enough, let’s talk return policy and warranty for a second.
“All stock Maven products can be returned within two weeks for full credit. Items must be in new condition. Custom units are built specifically to order and cannot be returned for credit.”
And on top of that it has an Unconditional Lifetime Warranty. Even if you screw up and break it (obviously accidentally) they will fix your mistake! This makes it a lot easier to invest in a high-end scope knowing you have such an amazing warranty protecting you.
“Maven optics are made with a commitment to you, our customer. All Maven optics come with an unconditional life-time warranty. If your optic becomes damaged or is at all defective (not including deliberate or cosmetic damage that does not hinder product performance), contact us immediately for repair or replacement. We don’t care where or when you bought it or if it was your fault or not – if it says Maven, we will take care of it.”
Finally, and to me one of the coolest things about the scope that has nothing to do with performance at all, is the Custom Builder tool you can use to personalize your scope! Everyone knows that 90% of being cool is looking cool, and with Maven you have the ability to up your ‘cool factor’ however you see fit!
In the video below, I walk through the custom builder and design my own personalized Maven RS.3. As you can see, I’m partial to the color green.
I leave for New Mexico in just a few days, and I cannot wait to get back in the field and put this fine piece of equipment to use! Check back in for the final and most exciting piece of this content series for the ‘Hunt Recap.’
