“Get Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs” (HOFNOD) at Tygart Lake State Park June 9. “We’re taking advantage of the free fishing weekend in West Virginia (June 9 and 10) to encourage families and children to visit Tygart Lake and go fishing,” said Stephanie Bailey, activities coordinator.
A Youth Fishing Derby, scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon at Tygart Lake Marina, is part of the HOFNOD program and has three age categories: age 5 and younger, ages 6-10, and ages 11 and older. A fishing derby participation form is posted on the park website (www.tygartlake.com) or call Stephanie Bailey at 304-265-6144 for information and registration.
“The fishing derby is great fun, but we’ve also scheduled a magic show, a Jiu Jitsu exhibition and some exhibits about the outdoors and playing safe,” Bailey said.
Exhibits and activities will be set up at Tygart Lake Lodge from 12:30 until 3 p.m. Exhibitors include FBI fingerprinting for kids’ safety, the YMCA encouraging “Active West Virginians,” WVU Extension Service and 4-H programs, PATCH program with a focus on tobacco and alcohol prevention, and the Tygart Lake State Park Foundation. At 1 p.m. there will be a Ground Zero Brazilian Jiu Jitsu exhibition and a 1:30 p.m. magic show with Magician Garry Boothe. Awards and fishing equipment presentation will begin at 2:30 p.m. The activities and exhibits are open to the public and without charge.
