How to Easily Grow Microgreens Indoor at Home!

Microgreens are filled with so many nutrients. They’re easy to grow and can be eaten within 2-4 weeks after sowing. Also, they can be grown in doors with minimal light.
Microgreens are a great thing to grow in winter especially because it’s cold and not many are growing much outdoors unless in a greenhouse. Microgreens take minimal space and you can keep growing and growing and growing all winter long!
Should you buy seeds that are specifically ‘for’ microgreens? I would say yes. These have been grown and developed specifically for the purpose of growing just a little bit, not into full grown vegetables. Microgreens are ready just about when the first true leaf has appeared.
You can get microgreen seeds from Survival Garden Seeds.
You can also grow micogreens from just about any seed and just let them reach the point of growing the first true leaf then consume. It’s up to you! I prefer to stockpile microgreen seeds specifically for growing microgreens.
How to grow microgreens:
Find some dirt and a long, narrow-ish tray. I like to use the aluminum baking trays. I can actually use these trays many times over before having to replace them. You can also get long, shallow plastic gardening trays which can be cleaned and used many times, as well.
The dirt can be just about anything. You can use regular gardening dirt or just dirt from outdoors, you don’t need to amplify the dirt with a bunch of nutrients for microgreens. We have also used coconut coir which worked great.
Lay a few inches of whatever soil you’ve chosen on the tray.
Next, generously spread the seeds on top of the soil. The more, the better! Don’t need to worry about spacing, spread ’em all around!
You can gently push them into the soil or lay a thin layer of soil on top of the seeds.
Keep the soil moist for the next 2-4 weeks until you see the first true leaf. Not excessively wet, but moist. I like to use a spray bottle so it doesn’t soak everything, but keeps it consistently moist.
Some microgreens will take longer to grow than others, but typically all will reach the first true leaf within 4 weeks, I’ve seen some reach readiness within 2 weeks. Just keep an eye on it.
You can place your microgreens near a window with indirect light. Some direct light is ok, but indoors with indirect light is perfectly fine, too.
How to use microgreens:
Here are some fun ways to use microgreens:
- Use as an appetizer
- As a pizza topping
- Add to sandwiches, burgers and wraps
- Mix into pasta or rice dishes
- Blend into smoothies
- Toss them in a salad
- Add to soups
- Add on top of eggs
- You can even dehydrate microgreens to make them into a powder and use in a variety of cooking and other foods!
There are a lot of different types of microgreens and they are all unique and taste differently, but they’re all packed with nutritious goodness which can be used in so many different ways.
