OHUB Review: Lew’s Custom Lite SS Spinning Reel

Calling all fans of the Lew’s Custom Lite Spinning Reel! Lew’s has announced a more lightweight reel that excels in the ultralight category. The Lew’s Custom Lite Shallow Spool Spinning Reel takes advantage of its minimal line capacity which eliminates any need for backing. The reel was released at the 2024 Bassmaster Classic and has been making waves since the announcement.

The Custom Lite SS is only available in a 200 size and is a welcomed addition to the Lew’s Custom Lite family.

I had the chance to try out the Custom Lite SS and after a weekend of use, I have decided that this reel will move into my “go-to” category when fishing a wacky rig. I paired the reel with a custom lite spinning rod 7’6 rod and was amazed at its performance.

My biggest takeaway was its weight and the lack of tangles. The reel holds 120 yards of 6-pound monofilament or 90 yards of 8-pound mono as opposed to the traditional Custom Lite Spinning Reel which holds 190 yards of 6-pound mono/160 yards of 8-pound mono. During my trip, I was able to land three bass with the largest weighing 2.5 pounds which is an absolute blast on an ultralight set-up.

My biggest bass came after I whipped my white spinnerbait into a set of lily pads. The reel’s drag performed incredibly well remaining smooth through the release. I was able to land the bass in under a minute which is refreshing for an ultralight reel.

The Custom Lite Shallow Spool is engineered with a Tanso Tech frame and skeletal rotor, which is feather light weighing only 6.7 oz. The reel is the perfect blend of light weight, sensitivity, and strength. Within the reel lies a precision-machined aluminum gear and a hybrid carbon drag system for steady power and ultra-smooth operation.
If you’re not one for oversized spinning reels and enjoy a lightweight, compact reel, the Custom Lite Shallow Spool is the way to go.

Lew’s Custom Lite SS Spinning Reel retails for 159.99 and will be available for purchase on Friday, March 22. through several outlets, both online and from dealers exhibiting on-site at the expo.
