National Junior Air Gun Championship Goes Electric

The 2012 National Junior Air Gun Championship, coming up on June 26-28 in Aniston, Alabama, will be completing their move to electronic targets this year.

The championship alternates between being held at CMP South (in Aniston) and CMP North (at Camp Perry). Megalink Electronic targets were introduced during last year’s match at CMP North with great success and the adoption of the targets will be complete after this year’s match has been shot.

Electronic target systems are extremely popular in Europe and are featured in the Olympics. As technology gets better and the demand continues to rise, electronic targets will begin showing up at more ranges around the Unites States.

Megalink’s target system uses very precise acoustic measurements to calculate scores and relay them to shooters much more quickly and accurately spotting scopes and paper targets. With electronic target systems, matches run much faster and competitors can focus more on the fun part – the shooting.

Electronic targets are a great improvement for more than just shooters. Their presence makes spectating much more enjoyable and easy to follow. Hopefully the rise of electronic targets will also see an increase in the popularity of shooting sports.

The National Junior Air Gun Championship is open to all juniors shooting sporter or precision air rifle. This is so much more than your ordinary a championship. There will be training seminars for shooters, parents and coaches on how to shoot for a college team, conditioning, the grant system, equipment maintenance and more.

You can look at this year’s program here online to familiarize yourself with the match’s schedule. Register online and visit CMP’s website for more information. Last but not least, the match’s rules can be found here on the NRA website.

If you want to get even more shooting in, the match is sandwiched between the USA Shooting’s 3P Junior Olympics sporter air rifle on June 23-25 and precision air rifle on June 29-July 1.
