OHUB Review: Abu Garcia PRO Spinning Reel

After spending a solid month with Abu Garcia’s latest Max PRO spinning reel, I can confidently say this isn’t just another entry-level offering. As someone who’s watched the Max series evolve over the years, this latest improvement to the line of reels really caught my attention.

I tried this reel out over a series of wintertime redfishing trips across the Lake Borgne marsh this month.

The first thing I noticed when using it was how lightweight it felt, thanks to its graphite body design.

As far as casting goes, the 7+1 stainless steel ball-bearing system gave me some of the smoothest retrieves I’ve experienced with a reel under 100 bucks.

On numerous hook-ups with slot-sized reds I recall how smooth the drag performed even on those long powerful runs that these bruisers are known for. That’s all thanks to the Carbon Matrix Drag System, which I’ve typically only seen on much pricier reels.

One feature that stood out during my testing was the Rocket Line Management system. If you’ve ever dealt with the frustration of wind knots (and who hasn’t?), you’ll appreciate this. I was casting into stiff winds last weekend, and the line lay was still remarkably clean. The Rocket Spool Lip design seems to help with line control – I spent more time fishing and less time dealing with tangles.

I also had the chance to try out the rod-and-reel combo version. The 24-ton graphite blank with its EVA handle proved super sensitive – On some casts, I could feel the lure scrape the oyster shells on the bottom.

Let’s move on to the reel seat. The reel seat design really lets you maintain good contact with the blank, which means you won’t miss those subtle bites, especially in the winter.

Drawing inspiration from Abu Garcia’s high-end Revo and Zenon series, this reel borrows some premium features while keeping the price point accessible.

The V-Rotor and V-Spool design not only keeps the weight down but also helps the reel start up smoothly – no jerky first turns when you begin your retrieve.

The Max PRO offers a solid upgrade for anglers looking to improve their game without breaking the bank. Abu Garcia has taken what worked in the original Max series and enhanced it with meaningful upgrades that you’ll actually notice on the water.
