Whether you’re a veteran angler looking to maximize your meat-to-bone ratio or someone who wants to improve their filleting efficiency, proper cleaning techniques and the right equipment make all the difference.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering anglers an opportunity to enhance their fish cleaning skills through a new virtual program series called “Pond to Plate: Fish Cleaning Equipment.” The program aims to help fishermen get the most out of their catch, focusing on essential equipment and proven techniques.
“We want to ensure that every angler can enjoy their catch to the fullest,” says Tim Smith, MDC Office Supervisor who will be leading the program. “Having the right equipment and knowing how to use it properly makes all the difference between a frustrating experience and a rewarding one.”

The first session of this three-part series kicks off on February 25th from noon to 12:30 p.m., focusing specifically on the tools of the trade. Smith will walk participants through everything they need to know about selecting and using the proper knives and equipment for clean, efficient fish cleaning.
What makes this program particularly valuable is its interactive nature. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and get real-time answers during a chat-based Q&A session. Whether you’re a seasoned angler looking to refine your technique or a newcomer wanting to learn the basics, this free virtual event is designed to enhance your fishing experience from pond to plate.
While the program is free, registration is required to participate. Interested anglers can secure their spot by visiting the MDC event registration page. After registration, participants will receive an email with the program link.

The event is being hosted by the staff at MDC’s Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center in Joplin, which continues to be a valuable resource for outdoor enthusiasts in the region. For those who want to stay informed about future programs and events, the Center offers text alerts and email bulletins. If you would like to learn more about signing up for these notifications, you can contact the Center directly at 417-629-3434. Staff at MDC facilities across the state are holding virtual and in-person programs. A listing of these programs can be found at mdc.mo.gov/events.
Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your fishing experience and make the most of your catch. After all, there’s nothing better than serving up a perfectly cleaned and cooked fish that you caught yourself!
