If you have never heard of an Eelpout, now is your chance to discover the splendors of this slimy fish! Sportsman Channel, the leader in outdoor TV for the American sportsman, takes viewers on a memorable journey into the world of eelpout at the 33rd Annual Eelpout Festival in Walker, Minnesota. Dead Meat is hosted by America’s leading authority on the proper preparation of fish and game, Scott Leysath, aka The Sporting Chef, as he travels to common U.S. destinations with uncanny food convictions. On his latest voyage, Leysath takes audiences to the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” to show the natives what their palettes are missing. Watch Dead Meat on Sunday, June 3 at 9:30 p.m. EST for an uncommon fishing trip that will leave you craving for eelpout.
The winter season in Minnesota would not be complete without hundreds of diehard anglers flocking to Leech Lake in Walker, MN for the Annual Eelpout Festival. What is an eelpout? It looks like a cross between a single-whiskered catfish and an eel – and it’s VERY slimy. There are varying degrees of participation at the festival, however; Mardi Gras on ice is one way of describing this fishing extravaganza. This is NOT your ordinary fish festival as shanties are decked out with couches, TVs and full kitchens. Leysath seeks out the assistance of two local fishing guides to reel in their eelpout. The “Sporting Chef” is determined to find out if this prehistoric-looking fish is what many call “poor man’s lobster” or something infinitely less palatable!
“Most of the people on the lake think of eelpout as a “trash fish”, said Scott Leysath, Host of Dead Meat. “When I asked the locals if they have tried eelpout, they looked at me at me as if they had just consumed sour milk. After my friend, Charlie helped prepare the eelpout; we fed everyone at the local restaurant.”
