Montana NRA Pistol Champion Makes It to the Olympics

Nick Mowrer, three-time NRA Intercollegiate Pistol champion (who only competed three years), is now an Olympian and will join Team USA at the London Olympics later this summer.
The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore were held over three days in Fort Benning, Georgia, at the United States Army Marksmanship Unit’s facility. Mowrer entered the last day’s 50m Free Pistol finals a single point behind 2008 Olympian Brian Beaman and needed to step up or go home empty handed.
Shooting a score of 10s, Mowrer notched a 100.2 – the highest final of the three-day match – and jumped to second place, clenching his spot on the US Olympic Team with a 1855.5.
Mowrer’s teammate Sergeant First Class Daryl Szarenski headed into the match in first and never relinquished it, winning the first team slot with a 1867.8.
This past March, Mowrer won his third High Individual Aggregate at the 2012 NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships also in Fort Benning, Georgia. The Butte, Montana, shooter moved to the U.S. Olympic Training Center a couple years ago to train for the Olympics full time and recently completed a degree in welding at Pike’s Peak Community College.
The 50m Free Pistol competition will be on August 5, at the Royal Artillery Barracks in London. Good luck, Nick!
