A Manitoba fishing licence will not be required on June 9 and 10 to encourage families to enjoy a day on the water and get hooked on fishing, Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh announced today.
“Fishing is a great way for families and friends to spend time together outdoors and we have some world-class fishing opportunities right across the province,” said Mackintosh. “I hope Manitobans and visitors will pick up a rod and reel and take the opportunity to fish for free.”
Summer family fishing weekends have been offered since 1992. On June 9 and 10, anglers will be able to fish without a licence provincewide, except in national parks where a federal licence is still required.
Anglers fishing without a licence will be allowed to keep a conservation limit of fish, which varies by species. All other rules and regulations will apply. Manitobans can review the 2012 Manitoba Anglers’ Guide for specific regulations. A copy of the guide can be obtained at www.manitobafisheries.com.
The minister noted that entry to provincial parks is free tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday.
In recognition of the free family fishing weekend, the Manitoba Wildlife Federation is hosting an amateur photo contest to promote fishing as a fun family activity.
“We want families to capture the beauty of Manitoba’s scenic waterways and post their photos on our Facebook page by June 17,” said Reid Woods, president, Manitoba Wildlife Federation. “Three random names will be drawn for family gift packs valued at more than $100.”
Established in 1944, the Manitoba Wildlife Federation is Manitoba’s oldest and largest conservation organization and works to ensure healthy fish and wildlife populations. For more information, call 204-633-5967 or visit www.mwf.mb.ca.
The minister also noted the free fishing weekend coincides with Canadian Rivers Day on June 10.
“Our rivers have played and continue to play an important role in the development of our province and it’s only fitting this free family fishing weekend falls on the day set aside to appreciate the beauty of our rivers,” said Mackintosh. “I hope Manitobans will head out with family and friends to spend an afternoon along the riverbank enjoying the great fishing Manitoba has to offer.”
