Phil Schreier, Senior Curator for the National Firearms Museum sends us the following museum update from Indiana:
Friendship, Indiana – The National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association’s Spring National Shoot is underway in Friendship and the National Firearms Museum is present and accounted for! The NMLRA’s Spring National shoot is also the home of the NRA’s National Muzzle Loading Championship with nearly 20 National Championship matches being held
This year there is a special exhibit commemorating the Corps of Discovery’s cross country trek commonly known as the Lewis & Clark expedition. Robert Anderson & Ed Falvo have brought a huge and comprehensive exhibit showing many of the firearms, uniforms and equipment that was used during the original 3 year expedition as well as reproduction items both gentlemen carried during their own 3 year retracing of the original expedition during the bicentennial celebration. The National Firearms Museum placed an original Girandoni air rifle, on loan to the NFM from Mike Carrick, in the display as well as a reproduction of one of the 15 Model 1792 US Contract rifles that were refitted at Harper’s Ferry and carried by the Corps of Discovery. (1792 rifle donated by the Dallas Arms Collectors Association)
The NMLRA Museum is also fortunate to have on loan an additional original Girandoni air rifle made for Frederick William III, the King of Prussia (1797 – 1840) and represents one of the few times that two original Girandoni air rifles have been displayed in the same exhibit.
The exhibits are on display in the NMLRA’s Museum complex is located in the spacious and new NMLRA Education Building. The new Education Building is also hosting over 50 special sessions during the Spring National Shoot that range from sword fighting demonstrations to soap making classes. A list of all the sessions, classes and special events can be found at on the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association website.
The NMLRA Spring National Shoot is in progress and concludes on Sunday June 17th. The NFM exhibit will be open Monday and Tuesday 11:00 – 2:00 and on Wednesday the 13th from 11:00 – 12 noon.
