Fourth of July Festivities at Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area

SALIDA, Colo. – Take a trip to the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) and enjoy an old-fashioned Fourth of July. All weekend long, there are all sorts of fun family activities from Leadville to Cañon City, and there’s not a better spot to be for a relaxing picnic with your family than along the Arkansas River.
On the evening of July 1, the U.S. Air Force Concert Band will give a free performance at Riverside Park in Salida.
On July 2, join naturalist Claire Davis and AHRA volunteer geologist Bob Hickey at AHRA’s Ruby Mountain campground at 6:30 p.m. for a geology talk and hike to explore some of the mysteries of the upper Arkansas River valley. The naturalist programs are funded in part by the Colorado Lottery and Great Outdoors Colorado.
The Buena Vista hometown parade starts in the morning on July 4 and Salida’s parade follows in the afternoon. Both communities will have fireworks displays that evening.
Whitewater rafting is at its peak with many top quality outfitters throughout the AHRA offering trips for all ages for an occasion to remember. All river users should be aware of current river conditions as well as their skill level, and use appropriate safety equipment.

The AHRA is managed through a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Land Management and Colorado State Parks. Formed in 1989, this partnership allows agencies to provide visitors with recreation opportunities and care for significant natural resources of the Upper Arkansas River Valley.
