Teen Injured in Hunting Related Shooting Incident

KEENE, N.H. — On July 19, 2011, at approximately 8:30 p.m., New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Law Enforcement received a call from New Hampshire State Police regarding a hunting-related shooting incident in Peterborough. N.H. Fish and Game Conservation Officers responded to a wooded area near Old Dublin Road in Peterborough, where Peterborough Police had reported that 16-year-old Cody Boutwell of Peterborough shot his 16-year-old companion Matthew Sandquist of Greenfield while hunting coyotes. The incident had occurred earlier in the evening, and the victim had been transported by ambulance to Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough for treatment and subsequently flown to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., for treatment of a gunshot wound. He remains there in stable condition.
A preliminary investigation by Fish and Game indicates that Boutwell had not completed a mandatory hunter education course and both young men were hunting without licenses. Coyote hunting season is open year round, but a hunting license is required. The incident remains under investigation by Fish and Game Conservation Officers.
